5. Leaving Abu Dhabi

June 16, 2012

I am 26 days away from completing my 2 year contract here in Abu Dhabi. I have met lots of great people and made friendships that I will follow through the times. I have learned a lot about myself and grown as a person. I have loved and lost. I have traveled and lived. As negative as this place is it has managed to bring positives to my life. After all life is what you make of it with what you get ;) I am a more patient, understanding, well rounded and grateful person after my Abu Dhabi experience. The people of this culture are arrogant, vane, hateful, ignorant, uneducated and hypocrites. The land where more is more and saving face is all that matters. The land where you get paid for doing nothing if you were born in one of the 7 glorious emirates yet house 20 working men in a studio size room in work camps. The land where Ferraris’ are disposed of as if they were tissues but there is no true recycling system. The land where they have enough money to build the tallest building yet there are still no laws regarding wearing seat belts or car seats for children. The land where women wear name brand glasses and purses because that is all they can show due to their black uniform like abayas worn over their clothe. The land where it is against the law to hold hands in public yet having several wives is perfectly normal. I could continue on with the many things wrong with this place but there’s too many. This place full off its problems has been one of the biggest personal growth opportunities for me. I am a different and better person for it. I will always remember my years in Abu Dhabi but definitely not miss Abu Dhabi. I will miss the money and my lifestyle.  I will miss the people that helped me build a family like community here in Abu Dhabi ;)
